The City of Pasco was ranked #3 in the state in the recently released “Washington’s Safest Cities” list published by Safehome.com.
The ranking calculates a “Safety Score” for major cities in the US. The higher the Safety Score, the more safe the data shows the city to be. Several different factors were examined assigning a Safety Score to a city. First is the FBI’s latest report of how many and what types of crimes occurred in each city over a single year. The city’s crime trends are also considered; in other words, cities where crime is on the decline are given a higher Safety Score and vice-versa. The ranking also looks at the number of law enforcement officers compared to the population. Finally, demographic metrics that are correlated to crime have a small impact on the Safety Score. These include metrics such as population density, population trends, unemployment rate, median income, education level, etc.
Pasco’s #3 ranking is the highest in all of Eastern Washington, and reflects the more than 80% drop in the crime rate in Pasco over the last 25 years. “We’re grateful that the community’s efforts in making Pasco safe for all residents are being recognized by these independent studies,” said Pasco Police Chief Bob Metzger. “While police certainly play a role in safety, the police cannot be successful without a strong partnership with the community.”
